Golden Hour Senior Session: Olivia

Seniors

Have you ever scrolled through senior photos and felt drawn to those warm, glowy images? Chances are they were taken during golden hour, that dreamy time before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and absolutely magical. As a photographer, golden hour is one my favorite time for a senior session. Olivia’s shoot around Redwood Falls is the perfect example of why this lighting is so incredible.

The Golden Hour Advantage

Golden hour isn’t just about pretty light (though, let’s be honest, it’s stunning). It also makes skin tones look smooth and natural, prevents harsh shadows, and creates that soft, glowing effect that can’t be replicated at any other time of day.

In my two-hour senior session, we typically start when the sun is still higher in the sky. That allows us to use shady areas, trees, and soft reflective surfaces to get even lighting while avoiding squinting or harsh shadows. As the sun lowers, we move into the open spaces—wide fields, country roads, or hilltops—to take full advantage of that golden glow.

Olivia’s Golden Hour Session

Olivia’s session around Redwood Falls is a perfect example of why golden hour works so well. We started downtown and Ramsey Park, using the shade of the trees and buildings to create soft, flattering portraits. Then, as the sun lowered, we headed to a tall grassy field and open sky nearby, where that warm light wrapped around her like a dream. The result? A stunning collection of images that feel both timeless and full of life.
